Viator, for tour operators

Viator commission for tour operators: what you pay and what you keep

Updated 7 November 2026 by Ravid Efroni, founder of GuidePing, which sends guide offers on WhatsApp. Read the tool comparisons with that in mind.

Short answer

Viator publishes no commission rate. It is set per product, depends on category and location, and is confidential under the Supplier Agreement. You are paid a net rate; if you enter a retail price, Viator applies your rate to it. Cited figures run from 20% to 27%. Viator Accelerate sells visibility for a higher rate, up to 50%.

You sold a €60 walking tour to ten travellers on Viator. The remittance shows €480, or €420, or nothing at all for one of the dates. This page shows where the difference goes, using Viator's own supplier terms and help pages, checked on 7 November 2026.

One thing most articles about Viator miss: since 1 August 2026, the retail price you enter is only a recommendation. Viator and partners such as Booking.com or Expedia decide what the traveller pays. What you are paid is the net rate, and that is the number to watch.

What commission does Viator charge tour operators?

Viator does not publish a standard rate. The rate is set per product, its minimum "is determined by your product's category and/or location" (Viator help), and the Supplier Agreement lists "Net Rates, commissions and margins" as confidential information (Supplier Agreement, section 11.1).

Your own rate is in the Supplier Management Center: it is the gap between the suggested retail price and "Amount you will get paid" on each product option.

Is the commission taken from the retail price or the net rate?

You are paid a net rate. If you enter a retail price instead, Viator applies your commission rate to it and saves the result as the net rate. The net rate that counts is the one in place for that date and time slot "at the moment the booking is confirmed" (Supplier Agreement, section 1.1).

  • Viator's help page: "Input your Suggested Retail Price. Viator will then use the Commission Rate (the margin paid to Viator on bookings) to back-calculate the 'amount you will get paid.'" You can also enter the amount you get paid and let Viator calculate the retail price (How Prices Are Set).
  • If your booking system sends prices through Viator's API (Pricing Sync), the price it sends is read as the suggested retail price and converted to a net rate the same way.
  • "The actual retail price displayed to travelers may vary from the Suggested Retail Price, at the discretion of Viator and its distribution partners" (Viator help).
  • VAT and other taxes on the sale are yours, "calculated by reference to the retail price paid by a Customer" (section 1.4). In some jurisdictions, including some US states, Viator collects the tax itself and pays you net of it (section 1.5).

What changed in Viator's supplier agreement on 1 August 2026?

New supplier terms apply from 1 August 2026, confirmed on Viator's own help centre: "The terms below apply from August 1, 2026 onwards" (Supplier Agreement). Viator did not announce them publicly; Skift reported them on 21 August (Skift). Using your account, keeping listings live or accepting bookings after that date counts as accepting them (Viator summary).

Sources: the old agreement, the new agreement (sections 1.6, 1.7, 4.2, 16.1, Attachment 3) and Viator's summary of 9 July 2026. Comparing the two texts, Viator already held the right to set retail prices; the new terms extend it to channel partners and say it may change "for any reason". That comparison is our reading.

Also new in 2026: an automatic cancellation with full refund when an urgent booking request or traveller question goes unanswered for 24 hours (response policy, 20 August), the Cancel for any reason add-on from the week of 21 September (see cancellations below), and Exclusive Deals turned into a permanent programme (30 September).

What does Viator Accelerate cost?

Viator Accelerate is Viator's paid visibility option. You raise a product's commission "by 1 percent or more above your product's standard minimum commission rate" and Viator shows it in ad placements, including on competitors' product pages. There is no upfront cost: you pay through a lower payout on every booking of that product (Accelerate).

  • The retail price does not change. "By increasing the product's commission rate your product's retail price will not change, but the amount you get paid will."
  • The maximum is 50% (Viator help). A higher threshold also removes competitors' ads from your own product page.
  • Ads start within 48 hours; a rate change takes 24 to 48 hours. Viator suggests keeping a new rate for at least 30 days. You can stop at any time.
  • The share of ads you get depends on bookings, reviews and commission compared with similar products, so it changes when competitors change theirs.
  • Products connected by API that send only a net price cannot join. With different rates on one product, Viator adds the increase to the lowest rate and applies the result to all schedules (Viator help).

Exclusive Deals: a second way to pay for placement

By invitation, you offer a fixed 10% discount to selected logged-in travellers in return for "enhanced merchandising". Your commission rate stays the same "but is calculated based on the discounted price", so your payout on those bookings falls by 10%. You can block out up to 45 dates a year (Exclusive Deals).

Worked example: what you keep from a €60 tour

Viator does not publish a rate, so the example assumes 20% (the rate in Viator's own example) and adds 10 points for Accelerate, as Viator's example does. Use your own rate from the Management Center.

Is Accelerate worth it? A quick check

  1. 01Start from what one traveller leaves you after the guide. At 20% you receive €48. If the guide costs €120 for a group of 10, that is €12 a head, so €36 is left.
  2. 02At 30% you receive €42, and €30 is left after the guide.
  3. 03€36 ÷ €30 = 1.2. You need about 20% more travellers on that product just to stand still, before VAT and other costs.
  4. 04Extra travellers only help if they join tours that run anyway. If they force a second guide or an extra departure, the guide cost rises too.

Viator claimed a 15% average booking increase for products in the 2021 Accelerate pilot (Arival, 2021). With the numbers above, 15% more travellers would leave you slightly worse off. Your figures will differ: check the bookings in Accelerate Insights after 30 days.

What other fees does Viator charge suppliers?

Several guides say Viator charges no listing fee. Rezdy, for example: "Viator suppliers don't have to pay sign-up fees". That is true of the account, not of products: each new product costs $29 (Viator, 8 June 2026).

When does Viator pay suppliers?

Viator pays after travel, by travel date. Bank transfers go out on the 7th to 10th working day of the month after the tour, PayPal every Monday for the week before, Payoneer by the 3rd working day of the month after travel (How and when do I get paid?).

PayoneerBy the 3rd working day of the month after travel$10Only for AED, BRL, IDR, INR, KRW, MYR, TRY, VND
  • New suppliers: "we may delay your payment for 30 days beyond the timeframes stated above."
  • The agreement itself allows up to 21 business days after the settlement period, and billing disputes must be raised by email within 45 days after the tour or 30 days after the payment advice, whichever is later (Attachment 1). You do not send Viator invoices.
  • Viator's pages disagree. Its "How Viator Works" article (June 2025) says "usually every two weeks" and "You control your own retail pricing" (Viator). The help centre and the 2026 agreement say otherwise. Go by the agreement and the help centre.

What happens to your payout when a traveller or you cancel?

Under Viator's standard policy, a traveller who cancels at least 24 hours before gets a full refund and you get nothing; later, there is no refund and the booking is paid. If you cancel, you may not be paid, Viator may charge fees, and your cancellation rate goes up.

Sources: cancellation policy, Cancel for any reason (rolled out from the week of 21 September 2026; you can ask Supplier Support to opt out), Supplier Agreement sections 2.5, 3 and 4.4. Other policies you can choose: All sales final; Moderate (full refund up to 4 days before); Strict (full refund up to 7 days, 50% from 3 to 6 days). Custom policies are not possible.

Your cancellations have limits

  • Viator counts cancellations by you over a rolling 90 days. Weather, force majeure and traveller cancellations do not count.
  • To stay listed your rate must be lower than 5%; Excellent is lower than 2% (Product Quality Standards).
  • A product may be removed if you cancel over 15% of bookings in 90 days, cancel five or more bookings within 48 hours of travel in 90 days, or fail three times in 90 days to pick up a traveller without telling them.
  • You can only cancel before the start time; you may be asked to offer another date or time (How to cancel a booking). After the tour, refund requests from travellers are processed if you do not answer within 72 hours (Refund a Traveler).

A missing guide is the most expensive line

On the €60 example, a full group leaves you €480. If no guide is at the meeting point, you receive nothing, Viator may add fees, and the cancellation counts toward the five-within-48-hours limit. On GetYourGuide the same group costs you a further €150 Cancellation Fee. Most of these cases can be seen the evening before: a guide who never confirmed, or a tour nobody was asked to take.

GuidePing offers each tour to a guide on WhatsApp, reads the reply, and asks the next guide in your order when one says no or does not answer in the time you set. At 18:00 you get one message: every tour tomorrow has a confirmed guide, or which one still needs you. Viator has no guide field, so the order of steps matters: assigning guides to Viator bookings.

Questions

What is Viator's commission rate for suppliers?

Viator does not publish one. The rate is set per product, the minimum depends on category and location, and the Supplier Agreement lists commissions as confidential. One operator told Arival in 2025 that Viator's basic rate is 27%; Rezdy, a booking software company, writes 20%; Viator's own help pages use 20% in an example.

Is Viator's commission taken from the retail price or the net rate?

You are paid a net rate, the amount you get paid per booking. If you enter a suggested retail price, Viator applies your commission rate to it to work out the net rate. Since 1 August 2026 Viator and its partners decide the retail price travellers see; your payout stays the net rate that applied when the booking was confirmed.

Does Viator charge a listing fee?

Yes, for new products. Viator charges a non-refundable $29 submission fee for each new product, including Launch Assist review, and charges it again if a rejected product is resubmitted. There is no monthly fee, and Viator pays the card fees for collecting from travellers.

What is Viator Accelerate?

Viator's paid visibility programme. You raise a product's commission at least 1 point above its minimum and Viator shows it in ad placements, including on competitors' product pages. The retail price stays the same, so your payout per booking falls. The maximum rate is 50%. You can change or stop it at any time.

When does Viator pay suppliers?

By bank transfer on the 7th to 10th working day of the month after travel, with a $50 minimum; by PayPal every Monday for the previous week, with no minimum; by Payoneer by the 3rd working day of the month after travel, for some currencies only. New suppliers may wait 30 days longer for their first payment.

Do I get paid if a Viator traveller cancels?

Under the standard policy, a traveller who cancels at least 24 hours before gets a full refund and you get nothing. Inside 24 hours the traveller gets no refund, so the booking is paid. If the traveller bought Viator's Cancel for any reason add-on and cancels in the extended window, the traveller is refunded and you still receive your full payout.

What happens if I cancel a Viator booking?

The traveller is offered another date or a refund. You may not be paid for the booking, and the agreement allows Viator to charge reasonable fees such as merchant and customer service fees. Your cancellations count toward your cancellation rate; Viator may remove a product if you cancel more than 15% of bookings in 90 days or five or more within 48 hours of travel.

What changed in Viator's supplier terms in August 2026?

New terms apply from 1 August 2026. Viator and its channel partners have sole discretion over the retail price, while your payout stays tied to the net rate. Complaints must be answered within 24 hours instead of 72. Insurance minimums are set by Viator. Using your account after that date counts as accepting the terms.
